I don't dont know a lot about the backstage of streaming apps, but I do know that Spotify oays ammount low enough to be considered abuse. I use Bandcamp to purchase official music from my favorite artists, and I have just strated using Qobuz, because I heard It pays better and the audio quality is improved. I was interested on Tidal because of audio quality as well, and I also heard It pays artists better than Spotify, but I m not currently listening to music on a device that supports such high quality. I think people are mostly attracted to Spotify because of all the social buzz.

Yes. Bandcamp is a lot better, and you support artists directly. Qobuz is really nice platform. I love it. Spotify has a massive user base, that's true.

Thanks for writing a comment, Olivia.

I've never heard of Subvert but it sounds interesting, I'll check it out. Thanks for writing about it! Just out of interest, what are your thoughts on Bandcamp?

You’re welcome, Charlotte. You might find the forum interesting or informative. If you like, click the invitation link in the post (not the one at the very end) — it will let you create a nickname and a profile. You can watch the discussions, ask questions, or just explore.

About Bandcamp… it was good, and in some ways it still is. But things have changed. When I first created my profile, Bandcamp felt different. I wasn’t releasing music publicly for years, and when I returned a stuff a couple of months ago, the platform had clearly shifted. They now have expert-curated playlists that fans can subscribe to — like a jazz listener being guided by an “expert.” Many people are skeptical because these kinds of features usually indicate where a platform is heading. And yes, Subvert’s documents show Sony-linked investment paths — subsidiaries, indirect connections, and so on — it all leads back to Bandcamp. That has always been the history.

Subvert may or may not become very classical-friendly — too early to say — but the forum itself might still be informative, even if you decide not to set up a full profile.

What do you think?

Thanks, I might just do that over the holidays, when I have more free time.

I see what you mean about the direction of Bandcamp. Having “expert” curated playlists does raise alarm bells. I have to say, I haven’t return to it for quite some time so I haven’t seen the changes yet. All I know is that, as an artist, I made the same amount from Bandcamp in one purchase than from a whole year of Spotify streams. But I’ll definitely keep my eye on its changes.

It’ll definitely be interesting to see how Subvert evolves.

Except for few changes Bandcamp is still a good place.

The payola comparison really hits the mark here. The pro-rata system inevitably rewards whoever can genrate the most volume, whether that's through bots or legitimate streams. Fixing individual fraud cases while keeping the same incentive structure is like trying to bail out a sinking boat without fixing the hole.
